People who manage their finances carefully regularly compare electricity, telecom and insurance offers, yet many overlook the costs of banking services for years. Moonika Maaring, Head of Retail Banking at Coop Pank, explains what to look for when comparing bank packages and services.
A bank account is often opened at a young age, and the same bank is then used for years out of habit. Over time, however, both your own needs and banks’ service fees, digital solutions, bank card terms and additional benefits may change. If you have not compared your bank with others for years, it is worth paying attention to the following points.
Review what you are paying for
Start with the monthly fee of your banking package and what services it includes. Sometimes you may be paying for additional services that you do not actually use. The package fee may also be accompanied by bank card maintenance fees or other smaller costs, whose real impact only becomes clear when added up over a year. At the same time, your package may include services or benefits that you have not been aware of and have therefore not used. That is why it is worth looking not only at the package price, but also at whether you are making full use of everything it offers.
Have new services and benefits been added?
Many customers use the same banking package for years without realising that new services or benefits may have been added in the meantime. For example, a package may include purchase rewards, purchase insurance, the option to deposit and withdraw cash at grocery store checkouts, or digital tools for tracking, categorising and planning expenses.
It is also worth checking what saving options your bank offers. These may include term deposits, savings accounts or automatic saving solutions that help set aside small amounts from everyday purchases. This makes saving money easier and more consistent.
Assess the usability of the online bank and mobile app
The cost of banking services matters, but satisfaction with a bank is often shaped by the everyday user experience. Payments and other transactions should be quick to make, important functions should be easy to find, and the mobile app should provide a clear overview of personal finances.
Habit plays a major role in banking. The bank you have used for years usually feels the most familiar. However, this does not always mean it is the most convenient or suitable choice for you. That is why it is useful from time to time to see how the same services work in other banks.
Can you get help quickly when you need it?
Today, most banking operations can be completed independently, but situations may still arise where you need advice or support from customer service. It is therefore worth considering how easy it is to contact the bank and whether the necessary banking services are available outside larger cities as well. This can be especially important if you need cash services or want to speak to a real person about a more complex question.
It is worth reassessing your choice of bank from time to time
Banking is constantly evolving, and so are the opportunities offered to customers. That is why it is worth reviewing your banking package, its costs, benefits and ease of use from time to time. You may find that your current choice still suits you well. On the other hand, a comparison may show that there are services or solutions on the market that better match your current needs.
