Do not let unexpected expenses ruin your trip – how to choose the right travel insurance

    Travel ・ 12.02.2025

Traveling is a fantastic way to explore new places and take a break from everyday life, but unexpected situations can quickly spoil the experience. Raivo Piibor, Head of Coop Kindlustusmaakler, shares insights on how to avoid travel-related problems with the right insurance and whether to choose single-trip or annual coverage.

Many people underestimate the importance of travel insurance, assuming that careful planning will prevent any issues. However, even the best-organized trip can encounter disruptions – flight cancellations, lost luggage, or health problems can lead to significant expenses and stress.

Medical emergencies and accidents abroad are quite common, and treatment can be extremely costly. For an uninsured person, hospitalization in another country can become a serious financial burden, which is why travel insurance policies offer medical coverage of up to €500,000. While cases reaching half a million euros are rare, treatment costs in the tens of thousands are not uncommon.

Single-trip insurance – a good choice for infrequent travelers

Single-trip insurance covers only a specific journey, and a new policy must be purchased for each trip.

If you travel infrequently, for example, once a year, this option may be more cost-effective. It is also ideal for those who want to customize coverage based on their destination or planned activities.

However, keep in mind that each trip requires a separate policy, which can be time-consuming. If you travel more than twice a year, single-trip insurance may be less advantageous than an annual plan.

Annual insurance – an ideal solution for frequent travelers

An annual travel insurance is valid for a full year, covering all trips taken during that period. If you travel more than twice a year, it is likely the most convenient and cost-effective option. For trips outside of Europe, this type of insurance may pay off even on the first journey.

Frequent travelers enjoy greater flexibility. Flight delays, lost luggage, or sudden health issues can significantly impact your trip. If your travel schedule often changes or you book trips on short notice, annual insurance provides continuous coverage without the need to arrange a new policy before each departure.

Statistics show that travel insurance is often overlooked for trips to nearby countries, yet Finland, Latvia, and Sweden are among the most visited destinations for Estonian travelers. Consequently, many travel-related incidents occur in these regions. Annual insurance provides coverage even for short trips, including flight delays, medical expenses, and lost baggage.

Choose the most convenient solution for traveling with your family

Traveling with children brings many unexpected situations, as they are more prone to illnesses and accidents. Both single-trip and annual insurance help cover medical expenses and additional costs if travel plans change.

While both types of insurance offer similar coverage, annual insurance from Coop Pank is particularly convenient for families, as it includes children at no extra charge.

For example, travel insurance for a week-long trip for a family of three in Europe usually starts at around €100, while costs for longer-distance destinations are even higher. In contrast, Coop Pank’s annual insurance costs only €8.90 per month or €106.80 per year, ensuring year-round protection worldwide. The coverage extends to you, your spouse or partner, and children under 22 years of age.

Find the perfect balance between cost and convenience

You can purchase Coop Pank’s annual insurance with a monthly payment through internet banking if you have a Väikerahn, Rahn, or Rändrahn account package. As this is a standalone insurance product, a credit card is not required for enrollment.

The insurance becomes active the day after signing the agreement, and there is no requirement to pay for your trip with a Coop Pank card.

When planning your travels, it is essential to consider potential risks. While single-trip insurance is suitable for those who travel occasionally, annual insurance is the most convenient and cost-effective option for frequent travelers or those who wish to insure their family members. Make an informed decision before your next trip and get reliable travel insurance today!
